The Tanjore Big Temple, also known as the Brihadeeswarar Temple, is a large temple located in the Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is often referred to as the “Periya Kovil” (Big Temple) of Tanjore. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is a prime example of the Dravidian architecture.
The temple was built by Rajaraja Chola I in the early 11th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a masterpiece of Tamil architecture. The temple complex includes the main temple, a massive tower (vimana), and various intricately carved sculptures and frescoes.
The Brihadeeswarar Temple is renowned for its grand architecture, particularly its towering vimana that is made of Tanjore district’s unique maragatha stone. The temple also features a massive Nandi (bull) statue carved out of a single stone, guarding the inner sanctum.
The temple’s sanctum houses a massive lingam, the representation of Lord Shiva. The inner walls of the temple are adorned with beautifully detailed murals and sculptures depicting various aspects of Hindu mythology and culture.
